Rod and Reel Adventures Monthly Email Newsletter
WELCOME
Since I spent most of July in Europe on an epic family vacation, I have combined July and August for this edition of the Rod and Reel News. Although the two months are similar in terms of weather, they mark a transition period in much of the northwestern part of the country.
In Alaska, July marks the end of the chinook salmon runs as most of these huge and tasty fish move from saltwater into fresh in June and July and by the time August rolls around, any you find in freshwater are usually hitting the end of their life cycle and are no longer fit for the fish boxes. The sockeye salmon are in full swing in Alaska and as late August rolls in the trout are just beginning to feed on the many salmon eggs in the fresh water systems. Halibut fishing is still excellent and the weather is as close to perfect as it can be.
In Oregon, the river levels are finally perfect and the steelhead are in near mint condition. We are still seeing new fish coming in every week and I've never seen so many chrome bright fish at this point in the season. I think it's due to the long stretch of high and cold water from the record wet and cold spring we have had in the Willamette Valley.
It's the start of hurricane season in the Caribbean - so prices are lower if you are willing to risk the weather. The fishing is actually the best in these months, but most people steer clear until November.
Baja Mexico is as hot as it gets - both in terms of weather and fishing. If you enjoy hot weather and hot fishing, you should be in Baja from now until late October. Marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, and roosters are the main targets. And it is still the best value on the planet for high quality fishing adventures.
Don't forget - if you are interested in fishing tips, techniques, personal stories, and more detailed information on fishing around the planet, please check out the blog - http://travelandfishtheworld.blogspot.com.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE BLOG - I am interested in any fishing travel information or stories or photos that you all have. I will gladly blog about them to the world and give you full credit. Please email me anything you think might be blog-worthy and I'll publish it.
HOSTED TRIPS
We are planning our FIFTH Campeche Baby Tarpon fiesta for November of this year. We have tentative dates of November 8-13 and November 13-18. Price is $2050 pp double occupancy for anglers, $1025 pp for non anglers. This fishing trip is one of my absolute favorites! CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO ON CAMPECHE
I'm also considering hosted trips to ANYWHERE WARM for the winter season 2011/2012. So if you have a group looking to escape the winter cold and want a host (NO CHARGE), let me know. I'd love to show you some of my favorite warm weather fishing destinations! Think Mexico, Costa Rica, Argentina, Belize, Chile, Brazil...
