CAMPECHE TARPON TOWN GENERAL INFORMATION
The town of Campeche is not on the beaten path. It
is relatively obscure which translates like this: People have not
ruined the fishing here yet! In January of 2006 I made my first trek to
this city. I was not surprised by the fishing because I had heard
rumors of the vast tarpon flats and the lack of fishing pressure. What
did surprise me was the clean, quiet, and very friendly "village" like
city of Campeche, the capital city of the Mexican state of Campeche. I
am confident that many of my clients will find out just how cool this
place is and I plan on taking more than one trip a year here myself.
Here's the story straight from the owner's mouth. Raul Castenada says this:
On the West Coast of the Yucatan
Peninsula facing the Gulf of Mexico lies the "BIOSPHERE RESERVOIR OF
LOS PETENES" just aside of the city of Campeche, nowdays known like
Tarpon Coast, shaped by more than 80 miles of mangrove shoreline,
countless rivers, cuts, creeks, channels and inner lagunas wich make
the ideal refuge or shelter for baby tarpons.
Most of the time we do sightfishing
or "hunt&fish" game. Rolling or gulping tarpons are easily located
following the fins or tails on their way up or down the rivers.
Depending on tide conditions, moon phases and weather, we chase them
along channels mouths, inner shallows in less than 3 ft of water or in
open bays where they hide in the turtle grass bottom or below hanging
mangrove branches. It is a real challenge for flyfishermen or light
tackle anglers to direct a great cast in the middle of a creek where
there is barely room for a rod. While fishing at open bays, it is also
a delightful spot for long castings. Skillfull anglers still get amazed
with this specie which lives and rolls in very narrow channels and novice get hooked forever.
Most of the daytime our native guides keep polling covering a vast territory searching
in every spot with the advantage of the lonelyness, fishing miles and
miles without seeing other boats. Opposite to other fishing locations
in the Yucatan or Ascencion Bay, this is a primarily Tarpon Destination
beeing the most important nursery in Latin
America... INCREDIBLE ISN'T IT? We are the pioneers in the area,
serving anglers community for over six years formed by a native team of
expert guides with the most shaped eyes in the region who have been
riding these areas for commercial fishing for a long time and now being
part of The Catch and Release Philosophy.
Besides all the fishing experience, birdwatching is
another wonderful experience in this spot where you will easily
identify various birds such as pelicans, seagull, white and roseate
ibis, spinbill ibis, white and gray herons, and some more....
Guides and Boats for CAMPECHE TARPON TOWN
In Tarpon Town
Anglers we have been recruiting and training native guides who really
know the whole fishing spots. This town is still based on commercial
fishery so seamen are found everywhere but not all of them are good
guides neither know the tarpon coast. They fish offshore and fishing
the mangrove is a whole other experience. The outstanding guides are
here with us, and sometimes other companies hire us when they want an
excellent boatman capable to handle flat and shallow fishing charter
for tarpon.
Juan "Chino", Fernando "Camaron", Joel
"Bambino" and of course your host me, RAUL, we are the members of our
crew and we have two new apprentices working now in training. They are
all hard working guys who enjoy their job and there is nothing else in
the world that likes them more than fishing.
Our guides have
started to manage some words for international fishing English such as
clock orientation and distances, but this has nothing to do with your
success in fishing... they'll put you where fish are and teach you some
words in Spanish with ease to locate tarpons. I am Raul and I speak
fluent English. I'll be your native host during your trip.
We will assist you choosing your flies, knots, coaching you to handle a fighting tarpon and so on...
We have a fleet of
two 18ft with 40 hp yamaha and two 23 ft with 65 hp johnson clean
pangas outfitted with casting deck and rod holders. This boats are far
to be a high-end boats but are the most comfortable on their kind for
this type of fishing, perfect for polling and lightest for rides on 3
ft of water. Boats do not carry a Top/roof so good sun protection is
mandatory.
