The rivers around Eugene are full of trout, salmon, and steelhead
for much of the fishing season. Bob Stockdall, a local product and a
great guide is ready to show you these waters and what they hold. In
March, the infamous "march brown" hatch on the McKenzie River starts
out our fishing season. Beginners to experts can catch the legendary
McKenzie Redsides as they awaken from the winter "coldrums" to begin
their feeding frenzy!
The steelhead soon show up in the Middle Fork of the Willamette, the
Santiam, and McKenzie Rivers. April to October can be dynamite
depending on
the water levels which fluctuate sometimes daily. The fish are hungry
and bright in the early months and get more finicky and river-worn as
the season progresses. We encourage release of all steelhead after
about July 4. But that is not mandatory. Only fin-clipped hatchery fish
can be harvested.
June brings the prime SPRINGER season into full force. These are the
most delicious fish of all. Full of oils that keep them strong for
their long migration from the Pacific close to two hundred miles away.
So tasty, my mouth is watering as I type!
