CLEARWATER LODGE GENERAL INFORMATION
Alaska's Clearwater Lodge was built on the premier location in all of Bristol Bay. We are located at the very center of the Bristol Bay Drainage, partially on the shores of Lake Iliamna. Lake Iliamna is the heart and soul of Bristol Bay fishing, and Clearwater Lodge in positioned at the outlet of the lake, where the world famous Kvichak River starts. The Kvichak River starts in front of the lodge, just feet from the main lodge building. Lake Iliamna is on one side of the Clearwater Lodge property and the gin clear water of the Kvichak River is on the other side. Our location is the key to some of the world's best native rainbow trout fishing. Rainbows up to 37 inches are caught in front of the lodge, off of our beach, in the Kvichak River.

WHAT YOU WILL FISH FOR AT CLEARWATER LODGE
Clearwater Lodge's fishing is world famous for 2 species: we catch the largest native Rainbow Trout in the world and we also have the largest natural sockeye salmon run in the world.

Rainbow Trout
Clearwater Lodge fishes the clear waters of the Kvichak River and Lake Iliamna. This is home to the world's largest native Rainbow Trout. The Rainbow Trout grow huge in the clear water of the Kvichak River. These are native Rainbows, never introduced or enhanced in any way. They grow to such large proportions due to the cold clear water of the Kvichak River/Lake Iliamna and the large food source of the world's largest natural run of sockeye salmon. In this area of the river, in front of Clearwater Lodge, the rainbows grow in excess of 37 inches.

Sockeye Salmon
The Sockeye Salmon run in front of Clearwater Lodge is hard to believe. In an average year, 9.7 million sockeye head to the Kvichak River. A few years ago, the Kvichak Sockeye run had 28 million fish. This is just the sockeye headed for the Kvichak River. This is a natural run that is not stocked or enhanced in any way. The run of Sockeye going past Clearwater Lodge is so great that in one day, (one 24 hour period) almost 600,000 sockeyes swam by the front door of Clearwater Lodge. This means that on average 6.9 sockeyes per second swam by the lodge for a straight 24 hours.

Silver Salmon (Coho)
The silver salmon (coho) fishing is equally thrilling in the clear water. We specialize in the use of dry flies (surface flies) in enticing the silver salmon to hit on the surface.

Silvers on the surface! What could be better?

King Salmon (Chinook)
At Alaska's Clearwater Lodge, we also catch the large King Salmon, (chinook). We catch the kings as they work their way up the river, holding at the mouths of various streams. They also run up the different streams in our area as well and it's a blast to catch these kings in the shallower waters of the smaller streams.

SEASON AT CLEARWATER LODGE
Late June to mid July is King Salmon and trout. Mid July through September is trout and the other salmon species. August is the best month for Silvers. Fishing is great all season long -- it just depends on which species you wish to pursue.

FISHING SCHEDULE AT CLEARWATER LODGE
Since the prime location to fish much of the year is just a few feet from your Guest Room, this gives you unlimited world class fishing 24 hours a day. Many times our Guests get up early and spend an hour or two catching rainbows or sockeyes, and even coho's on our beach before Breakfast.

Guests also are allowed to fish in the evening, before and after dinner, and into the night. At Clearwater Lodge, you can fish as long as you like. We do not have a set fishing schedule for you to follow. Our fishing schedule is that you can fish as long and as often as you like.

Our Guides are used to the long hours that some Guests like to fish, and will happily Guide you late into the night. (Of course the Guides do have to sleep and eat, however on those occasions, Guests are certainly welcome to fish on the beach on their own.)

Large Rainbow Trout can be caught right in front of the lodge at any time of the day. The larger rainbows hold just where the current begins in the Kvichak River.

We do have a few restless Guests who get up in the middle of the night to fish as well. It might be 2:00 am to the Guides and Staff, but it might only be 6:00 am to someone who just arrived at the lodge from the East Coast. Guests are free to fish on the beach in front of the lodge any time that they want to!

We are so lucky at Clearwater Lodge, that we have this type of great fishing right out of our front door. Many lodges have some fishing available in front of the lodge, but it's usually not spectacular, and often don't encourage the Guests to fish late in the evening.

Many lodges also do not allow evening fishing, or fishing into the night, and instead have specific hours for guests to fish.

HOW TO GET TO CLEARWATER LODGE
Depending upon which air service you choose (there are several) to get to Clearwater Lodge, the flight may be as short as about an hour, or an hour and fifteen minutes.

The flight from Anchorage to the Lodge is very scenic and enjoyable. You fly over Cook Inlet, down the Alaska Coast, through or over the mountains, and then you are in the vast tundra area of Bristol Bay.

When you land at the airstrip located about 1/2 mile from the lodge, Clearwater Lodge personnel will be there to greet you and take you across the river to the lodge.

The whole process of traveling from Anchorage to the lodge can be as short as an hour and a half. If your flight out of Anchorage is at 8:00 am, then it's possible for you to be at the lodge by 10:00, and fishing by 10:30 am. This allows for an almost full day of fishing on your arrival day.

It sure is nice to be able to catch Rainbow Trout of this size (pictured at left) just a few hundred yards from where the airstrip is.

On your other travel day, your departure, depending upon when you schedule your flight to leave for Anchorage, you can also have an almost full day of fishing. Since you only have to go across the river to get to the plane, it just doesn't take much time, which allows you to fish right up to the departure time.

Good fishing on your travel days is important on a 7 day/ 6 night trip, however it is vital on a shorter stay, such as our 4 day/ 3 night trip.
